Semi Pro Volleyball Rules

Main Rule Set = USA Volleyball

We follow USA Volleyball rules. This is how we adapt the rules to our league. 

General

  • Max of 3 men and minimum of 2 men on the court at a time 
  • All games will be played to 21 win by 2 with a hard cap of 25 
  • All games are rally scoring.
  • The official ball of semi pro will be the Molten V5M5000
  • Deficit Rule- If a team has to go down to 5 players, a team has to take a 3 point deficit for the next games to 21 with 5 on the court, if team goes down to 4 it will be a forfeit. In the event of an injury or an extenuating circumstance, the team can pick up an available player from the pool the day of, or the opposing captain can waive the 3 point deficit
  • Rotation - Teams may opt to have a player not player an entire game. However, if they do chose to utilize a sub it has to be in one of the following formats:
  1. Traditional Even Subbing format - Players sub out on serve evenly and adhere to gender requirements on the court
  2. One-for-One- Before the game the captain announces to the ref and opposing captain that a player is a direct sub for another player on their team. This allows them to sub in and out whenever the captain decided but only for the players declared

Playing Rules

  • Semi Pro Rules will be much stricter than our typical league night. 
  • The following rules will be called without warning and result in the other team gaining the point, Net violations, Coming underneath the net, Line Faults, 10 foot line, Carries
  • The opposing team may not β€œattack” a serve. This is classified as a front row player who leaves their feet and hits the ball above the net and back on to the other teams side
  • Line Fault- When the server touches the line on the serve - result is the other team gets the point 
  • The opposing team cannot break the plane of the net to hit a ball that is on the opposition side.
  • The ball is still 'live' if it contacts a non-playing surface (example, the ceiling) and stays on the same side of the net. The ball is 'out' if it contacts a non-playing surface and goes over the net.
